Blog Post: A Joy-Filled Sunday of Movement, Art, and Islamic Values at the Islamic Center of Boulder
Posted on February 24, 2025
This past Sunday, February 23rd, the Islamic Center of Boulder was filled with energy, laughter, and creativity as nearly 70 children ages 3–15 joined us for a memorable event combining physical movement, Islamic storytelling, and art!
Our event kicked off with a high-energy Obstacle Course and Movement Fun session, where kids crawled through tunnels, hopped over imaginary rivers, zig-zagged between cones, and balanced carefully along tape lines. The children cheered each other on as they took on fun physical challenges designed to build coordination, confidence, and teamwork. From animal walks to freeze dance and the ever-popular balloon keep-up game, the masjid came alive with joy and excitement.
After all that movement, it was time to slow down and spark creativity through our Islamic Art & Patterns Workshop, inspired by the beautiful book Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns by Hena Khan. Children listened to selected excerpts from the story and then explored Islamic geometric patterns, learning how symmetry and repetition create the intricate art seen in mosques around the world. Using simple materials like paper, glue, and everyday household items, the kids created their own vibrant art pieces, proudly showing off their unique designs and newfound knowledge of Islamic culture and symbolism.
The event was not just fun — it was meaningful. It gave our young community members the chance to connect with Islamic values through hands-on learning and movement. Parents expressed their gratitude for a space where their children could be both active and spiritually enriched in a way that felt joyful and welcoming.
We extend a huge thank you to all the families who participated and supported this event. Special appreciation goes to our amazing volunteers who helped guide the children, set up the activities, and made sure everything ran smoothly.
This event reminded us all how powerful it is to nurture both the body and soul — especially in the youngest members of our community. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future, insha’Allah!
Stay tuned for more family-friendly activities at the Islamic Center of Boulder.
Together, let’s keep building spaces where faith, fun, and community come together.
